Some video footage of yesterday's juvenile Sabine's Gull - https://youtu.be/QWneO1EE6QQ

I spent hours staring fruitlessly out to sea then as I was leaving I stopped to photograph gulls on the beach and found this juvenile Sabine's Gull. All's well that ends well.

Nice find. Have only ever seen one - on a misty beach full of a few thousand Kittiwakes (& other gulls & terns) and it didn't linger too long - though I did manage video and photos.

Glad you were not intimidated from reading about these tricky birds Christine.

Great read Nick, I remember a few years ago when a certain film was released that birders were using the title to some up gull identification ' 50 shades of Grey"
Andrew Goodall
I am inclined to agree with intermedius Nick but then there are a number of birds which like Dulux paints tend to overlap so dark graellsii, light intermedius and light fuscus. Bloody teenagers!!
Nick Upton
Haha, yes 50 shades of grey indeed. And it very much depends on the light available. The structure of that bird is such that I am even wondering if it is fuscus.

Turnstones are among my favourite birds. The way they are so busy that you can get close & watch them go about the business appeals to me. In this video I show you the various methods they use to feed...View More

Good observation and an interesting read. I have not been for a few years but did see a canvasback there several years ago. My only UK sighting of this North American duck.
Nick Upton
There coukld have been one there when I visited but I didn't pay enough attention to the hundreds of Common Pochard present ;)

You are getting about a bit Nick!

Got to make the most of it.

To right how long is the stay?
Nick Upton
Depends on the Thai government. Until now they have controlled covid-19 completely so they are only just talking about allowing people back in & the details are not yet clear. They may well not allow people from covid-shambles countries like UK back in yet.
Andrew Goodall
You might get some winter birding in then!
Nick Upton
It is certainly looking like it.

One of the most amazing bird spectacles I know is the harrier roost at Chiang Saen, Northern Thailand where 2-300 Pied & Eastern Marsh Harriers gather - https://youtu.be/POALZ9ymAlE

A pair of Little Grebes. They were used to people at busy Foots Cray Meadows, SE London, so I was able to get very close for this shot.

Recently I visited an old favourite location in South Wales to find Dipper. I got great views and managed to get some very nice footage of it too. Take a look - https://youtu.be/WpqFX_JItNc

Non-breeding plumage Red Knot roosting on the beach at Shellness in Kent, UK. This is a bird I don't manage to get close to very often so it was nice to see this one in detail.
