Chirp's user rankings are based on the users life lists. Life lists are calculated according to the following four different geographic types: Regions, Countries, Provinces and Birding Areas.

So if you were to post a sighting of a bird (that you hadn't seen before) in Yosemite National Park, in the USA, then your life list would all increase by 1 for:

  • Region = North America
  • Country = United States of America
  • Province/State = California
  • Birding Area = Yosemite National Park.

Your rank would then be calculated for all four different geographic types (shown above) based on:

  • All-time - The number of species you have posted over the years ranked against all users
  • This year - The number of species sightings you have posted in the current calendar year ranked against all users
  • Friends - The number of species you have posted over the years ranked against your friends
  • Following - The number of species you have posted over the years ranked against all users you follow
  • Age - The number of species you have posted over the years ranked against all users in your age group
