Hi Martin. The bird which is broadside does not appear to have white running up the shoulder. Are you sure this is not a Green sandpiper?
Barry Farquharson
Was just about to ask that too.
Martin Gathercole
yup one green photobombing the CSPs 👍
Martin Gathercole
I think you're right, I saw both in the vicinity through bins but photos were a bit distant

Records shot, I saw 6 amongst the coots and GC Grebe

Any other pics (no matter how bad), or impressions (size, behaviour, what it reminded you of). Also what sort of location (looks to be a field but may not be representative of surroundings).
Barry Farquharson
Currently leaning towards a juvenile Cuckoo as at least 1 possibility but can't see tail well enough to judge.
Martin Gathercole
Hi Barry, was the only pic, moving quite fast at low level over farmland near to salt at field edge marshes, appeared to land in a bush. A skylark went up and had a bit of a mid air squabble
Barry Farquharson
How did the size compare to the Skylark? Cuckoo has a distinctive flight style too with wings not usually being raised above the level (unlike in your photo - which may well rule out juv. Cuckoo) but the subtle curvature of the outer wing and the extent of brown/white on underside do have me struggl...View More

It was about Cuckoo size but I thought they had all moved on by now. it was a very quick capture and I expected it to be a falcon but colouring & wing shape didn't pass scrutiny
Barry Farquharson
Adults should be gone, but young birds are on the move now. The expectation of a raptor and the resultant confusion does mirror my own when one flew past a hide I was sat in.
Barry Farquharson
https://flic.kr/p/adj1fW - I think this pic of mine is probably a decent match for yours overall. I think we can safely say (90% certainty) that it is a juvenile Cuckoo.
Martin Gathercole
Agreed, a juvenile Cuckoo. Thanks for taking the time to help👍
Andrew Goodall
