Great Eared Nightjar flies around calling quite early as it is getting dark at a time when there is still a fair amount of light. They call in flight and arch their whole body as they call. I usually mimic the call and they will fly a few feet overhead. Earlier this year I got divebombed by one as I made the call when it was flying high overhead. It plunged down from a few hundred feet up, buzzed around my head and landed nearby allowing me to get a photo as it was getting dark. The photo is a bit grainy as I had to use 16000 ISO.

They really are impressive birds Nick.

One of my favourites. Always a good way to end a day leading a birding tour.
