I think this is a kestrel but the tail looks different and it did not hover although might just be flying to a different hunting area, Can anyone identify please

I'd have said a Sparrowhawk ߤ
Steve whiteraven
Yes that seems likely the yellow eye, its the tail did not look right to me
Barry Farquharson
Sparrowhawk, Steve....as Martin has said.
Steve whiteraven
Strange thing but have seen many raptors in flight including peregrine. Marsh harrier , Hobby and merlin but first time i have seen a sparrowhawk
Barry Farquharson
back when I was a kid it was only Kestrels I saw. Now Sparrowhawk and Buzzard are the common ones with Peregrine and White Tailed Eagle less often and Kestrel trailing in 5th. Red Kite starting to appear too.
Steve whiteraven
Barry Farquharson I have heard rumour's that there are red kite been seen locally which would be nice but i wonder if they have confused it with the buzzards which we have plenty of, There was some excitement that a white tailed eagle was seen at Ham wall here in somerset but i have not heard anythi...View More

I suspect that is a caterpillar, rather than nest material (having seen one a bit like that this week too).

What did the yellowhammer, the chaffinch and the goldfinch have to discuss ?

Well, I don't think I will be using birda its a shame but i am not interested in anything that only works through a phone app (one that isn't actually available yet anyway on android)as I use a camera...View More

If as expected my blog views plummet when Chirp goes (no clickable links on Birda), I will have no reason to stick around on Birda. I much prefer using the website for Chirp than the app. Trying to view pics on a phone screen - especially for trying to help with IDs is in some cases a waste of time ...View More

Sorry to hear that Steve, we will have a web version ready towards the end of spring next year. In the mean time I’d love to get you set up on our Android beta build. If you drop me a line on dom@birda.org I will sort that out for you. Cheers, Dom

Sorry to hear that as well. Haven’t been here a year yet but I’ve enjoyed your posts and the camaraderie in general here. Just managed to finish “kicking the tires” on Birda and so far I’m less than impressed.

Thank you, Event though it was a dull gray day there were more birds than i have seen there before so it was a good day.

Your Godwits are Black Tailed's, Steve. You can see the wing and tail pattern in the 2nd pic. Bar Tailed's in winter plumage are a bit more 'patterned' on the back than the more plain backed Black Taileds.
Steve whiteraven
Ok thanks Barry :-)
